Mr. Peter Obi, the former Anambra State Governor, has confirmed Prof. Dora Akunyili's death. He also disclosed that the former NAFDAC Director died after a two-year battle with cancer. He released an official statement on the late Dora’s facebook page on behalf of the family. Read below,

On behalf of the Akunyili's family, I wish to officially confirm the death of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India this morning at 10 am, Nigerian Time, after a two-year battle with cancer.

In spite her illness, Prof. Akunyili was unwavering in her belief in a better Nigeria. That was why she defied her condition and was part of Anambra State Handover Committee and the National Conference.

The last time I visited her in India, even when she needed all the prayers herself, she was full of concern for the abducted Chibok girls, security and other challenges facing the country and told me that she remained prayerful for the release of those girls and for God to help President Goodluck Jonathan to overcome all the challenges facing the Nation. She therefore urged all Nigerians to remain prayerful and committed to building a better society for our children. We all prayed together and I promised to be visiting her every month.

We thank all those who remain fervent in prayers for her recovery and urge them to remain prayerful for the peaceful repose of her soul.

I constantly thank God Almighty whenever I remember the great love you show me, as reflected in your comments and in the numerous awards given me from various parts of Nigeria and beyond.

  1. Dear Madam Dora,

I never knew you personally but you had so much impact on me. I pray for half the passion you committed into every task you where assigned for the betterment of Nigeria. You loved Nigeria selflessly, you gave it your all. Your good deeds at NAFDAC can never be forgotten.

I love you and pray that when the roll call in heaven is called, you will stand tall and proud

    1. Amen! What an inspirational, selfless woman. I remember following her stories of dealing with fake drug barons fearlessly. A real woman of courage.. It's so sad to read that she's dead but I dare say she lived a good life and her legacies will surely outlive her... Phenomenal woman

  2. May her soul RIP.
