Nina Davuluri Becomes First Miss America of Indian Heritage, Brushes Off Racist Criticism

Posted in: , ,

Nina Davuluri was crowned the first Miss America of Indian heritage last night and has brushed off most of the negative racist comments that flooded the internet after her win. She said, according to AP,

"I'm so happy this organization has embraced diversity. I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."

As for the negativity, she said, "I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American."

Davuluri also took a minute to say how proud she was of her talent portion of the show. "It's the first time Bollywood has ever been performed on the Miss America stage and it's such an honor for myself, my family and the Indian community, as well."

Check out some of Nina Davuluri's beautiful pictures below. Congrats to the new Miss America!

The internet, especially twitter went into overdrive last night in the wake of Nina Davuluri being crowned as Miss America 2014. A lot of the tweets were attacks on the fact that she is of Indian descent.

She was referred to as "the Arab," by some and others tweeted, "This is America, not India." One called her "Miss 7-11." There were those who said her win was inappropriately close to the 9/11 anniversary. Some mentioned ties to al-Qaeda and at least one called her a terrorist out right. Fortunately, a lot of tweeters also stood by the new Miss America. You can se some of the responses to those racist comments above. The best one ends, GET OVER IT.
